π Step-by-Step
1
Choose a microencapsulated (CS) or emulsifiable concentrate (EC)
Consumer RTU sprays often contain concentrations too low for lasting residual. Professional concentrates (Bifen IT, Demand CS, Suspend SC) at label rates provide 60-90 day residual. Demand CS (microencapsulated) holds up best in heat and UV.
2
Treat on a day with no rain forecast for 24 hours
Rain washes away product before it bonds to surfaces. Allow 24 hours minimum between application and the first rain for adequate residual establishment.
3
Apply to the right surfaces β not everywhere
Focus on: the 12-18 inches of foundation wall above the soil, the top 12 inches of the soil/mulch at the foundation, and the underside of eaves. Flying insects rest on eaves; crawling insects come through the soil-foundation junction. Do not spray open grass.
4
Wet the surface to visible wetness β then stop
The surface should appear wet but not dripping or running. Excess product runs off and wastes money; too little product doesn't deposit enough active ingredient for residual. A consistent, thorough wet appearance is the target.
5
Don't disturb the treated surface for 30-60 minutes
Allow the spray to dry undisturbed. Walking through a wet application or watering before it dries significantly reduces residual. Post 'wet spray' signs if others need to access the area.
6
Keep a log β reapply every 60-90 days
Mark your calendar. Perimeter spray effectiveness fades predictably. Bifenthrin: 60-90 days outdoors. Lambda-cyhalothrin: 60-90 days. Deltamethrin: 60-90 days. Never let more than 90 days pass during pest-active months.
π‘ Pro Tips
- Apply product in the evening β this avoids heat that accelerates breakdown and minimizes bee exposure during daytime foraging
- Concrete and stone surfaces hold residual much longer than soil β focus spray on hard surfaces for maximum longevity
- Never apply perimeter spray during or just before rain β even 10 minutes of light rain can remove 50% of a fresh application
- For maximum results, combine perimeter spray with door/window exclusion work β spray can't stop insects from entering through gaps
