π Steps
1
October: The critical exclusion month
October is the highest-impact month for winter pest prevention. Field mice are actively seeking winter harborage, cluster flies are seeking attic hibernation sites, and boxelder bugs are trying to enter wall voids. All exclusion work done in October prevents the entire winter of pest problems.
2
Set snap traps in October before mice enter
Don't wait until you hear mice in the walls. Set snap traps along all interior walls in October β kitchen, basement, and utility areas. Peanut butter bait. Check every 2-3 days. Catching mice in October means you're catching individuals as they explore, not managing an established colony.
3
Insulate all pipe penetrations
Cold snaps cause pipes to contract slightly, widening gaps around utility penetrations. Inspect and seal all penetrations (gas, water, electrical, cable) in October before the first freeze. Copper mesh plus silicone is the most durable combination.
4
Heat tape and insulation prevent pest-friendly condensation
Uninsulated pipes condensate in winter, providing water sources for cockroaches and silverfish. Insulating pipes in cold utility areas reduces moisture that sustains pest populations through winter.
5
Check for moisture in crawl spaces after first freeze
Freeze-thaw cycles can dislodge vapor barriers and create condensation in crawl spaces. A post-freeze crawl space inspection identifies moisture issues before they become pest-supporting conditions throughout the winter.
π‘ Tips
- The biggest winter pest mistake: seeing no pests in November and assuming everything is fine. Many winter pest problems are invisible until March when overwintering populations emerge or reproduce in spring
- Cockroach populations don't decline in winter inside heated structures β if anything, the warmth relative to outside concentrates activity. Monthly kitchen inspection with a flashlight in winter catches cockroach activity before it explodes in the spring
- Cluster flies inside wall voids in December cannot be eliminated by spray β they're in a protected hibernation location. The only management is vacuuming emerging individuals and applying Delta Dust to attic vents before they enter next October
- Rodents produce warmth as they nest in groups β a cluster of mice in insulation can create enough warmth to melt snow above them. This heat signature is visible on thermal imaging cameras, which some professional rodent-exclusion companies use
