📋 Step-by-Step
1
Understand what IGRs do and don't do
IGRs (methoprene, pyriproxyfen, hydroprene) mimic juvenile hormone — they prevent immature insects from developing into breeding adults. They do NOT kill existing adults. IGRs must always be combined with an adulticide (contact insecticide) for complete control.
2
Choose the right IGR for your target pest
Methoprene (Precor): fleas — the gold standard. Pyriproxyfen (Nylar): fleas AND cockroaches. Hydroprene (Gentrol): cockroaches and stored product insects. These are not interchangeable — each has specific labeled uses.
3
Apply IGR to the same areas as your adulticide
For fleas: spray carpets, upholstered furniture, and pet resting areas with a combined product (Ultracide = permethrin + pyriproxyfen) or separately with a contact spray followed by IGR spray. For cockroaches: apply Gentrol along with gel bait placement.
4
Allow 60-90 days for full IGR effect
IGRs affect insects that contact treated areas and pass through them — the effect accumulates over 60-90 days as the treated population fails to reproduce. Continue adulticide treatment during this period. Don't expect immediate dramatic results from IGR alone.
5
Reapply at the labeled interval
Methoprene/Precor: lasts 7 months on carpet surfaces. Pyriproxyfen/Nylar: 4-6 months. Hydroprene/Gentrol: 90 days. IGR residuals are long-lasting — over-application wastes product without improving results.
💡 Pro Tips
- The combination of a fast-acting adulticide + long-acting IGR is the professional standard for flea and cockroach elimination — neither alone is as effective as the combination
- IGRs are extremely safe for mammals — juvenile hormones are highly specific to insects and are not present in vertebrates
- For flea control: always treat all pets with veterinary flea product simultaneously with environmental IGR treatment — pets are the source of ongoing flea introduction
- Some combined consumer products (Ultracide, Knockout E.S.) contain both adulticide and IGR — convenient but must be reapplied per label since IGR and adulticide residuals differ
