π Identification
Adults: 4-7mm; orange-red with 13 black spots (pattern varies); two converging white lines behind head on thorax β the diagnostic 'convergent' feature. Larvae: alligator-shaped; dark with orange spots; voracious aphid predators. Found on plants with aphid colonies from spring through fall.
𧬠Biology & Behavior
Convergent lady beetles are migratory β California populations famously aggregate in the Sierra Nevada mountains in summer. They're sold commercially for garden pest control, though releases often disperse immediately. Native population declines are documented in areas where MALB is established β direct competition and possible predation of native lady beetle eggs by MALB is suspected.
β οΈ Damage & Health Risk
Zero β entirely beneficial. Adults and larvae consume hundreds of aphids per day, plus scale insects, mites, and small caterpillars.
π§ DIY Treatment
Protect native populations by avoiding broad-spectrum insecticide spray when aphid pressure is light and lady beetles are present. Plant diverse flowering plants (native species) that provide alternative food and shelter.
