π Identification
Not an insect profile β a plant disease transmitted by insects. Symptoms: mottled green/yellow mosaic pattern on leaves; leaf curl and distortion; stunted growth; reduced yields. The virus is incurable in infected plants. Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) and zucchini yellow mosaic virus (ZYMV) are most common in vegetable gardens.
𧬠Biology & Behavior
Non-persistently transmitted: aphids acquire the virus in 30-60 seconds of probing any infected plant and can transmit it to healthy plants in seconds β before any insecticide has time to kill them. Killing aphids after they've landed on healthy plants doesn't prevent transmission. Winged aphids flying through the garden spread virus continuously.
β οΈ Damage & Health Risk
Stunted, deformed plants with reduced yields; incurable once infected; most devastating to cucumbers, squash, melons, beans, and peppers; entire plantings can be lost in high-pressure years.
π§ DIY Treatment
Prevention only: reflective mulch (silver polyethylene) repels 70%+ of winged aphids before landing. Row covers exclude aphids entirely during establishment. Mineral oil spray on leaves delays transmission even when aphids land. Resistant varieties where available. Remove infected plants immediately to reduce virus reservoir.
π· When to Call a Pro
Commercial vegetable production with virus pressure requires an IPM advisor to develop comprehensive prevention programs.
