Active Ingredient Profile

Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus (OLE/PMD)

Plant-derived Repellent (Corymbia citriodora)

Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus (OLE) is the only plant-based repellent recommended by the CDC as comparable to DEET for mosquito and tick protection. Its active compound - PMD (p-menthane-3,8-diol) - provides 6-8 hours of protection at 30% concentration. Do NOT confuse with regular lemon eucalyptus essential oil, which is different and less effective.

Mode of Action
Olfactory repellent: masks human attractant cues from mosquitoes; PMD compound provides long-duration spatial repellency

Target Pests

Mosquitoes (all major species - CDC-recommended), ticks (proven repellent in studies), biting flies, gnats, no-see-ums. OLE with 30% PMD approaches DEET effectiveness in comparative studies. One of very few natural repellents with strong scientific evidence.

Products and Brand Names

Repel Plant-Based Lemon Eucalyptus (30% OLE - the gold standard consumer product), Cutter Lemon Eucalyptus, OFF! Botanicals (contains PMD), Murphy Naturals Lemon Eucalyptus. Look for products listing p-menthane-3,8-diol (PMD) or Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus as the active - NOT lemon eucalyptus essential oil.

Safety and Precautions

Generally safe for adults and children over 3 years old. CDC does NOT recommend for children under 3 years (insufficient safety data for this age group - use DEET or picaridin instead). Can cause skin irritation in some individuals. Eye irritant - avoid eye area.

Critical distinction: Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus (OLE/PMD) is NOT the same as lemon eucalyptus essential oil. OLE undergoes a chemical conversion process that creates PMD - the active repellent compound. Raw lemon eucalyptus essential oil has much lower PMD content and is significantly less effective. Always look for PMD on the label.

Pro Tips

The best natural repellent: If you want a plant-based alternative to DEET that actually works, OLE/PMD is the clear winner. It is the only plant-derived repellent on the CDC recommended list alongside DEET, picaridin, and IR3535.

Duration: Repel Plant-Based (30% OLE) provides approximately 6 hours of mosquito protection in field studies - comparable to 15-20% DEET. Reapply as needed.

For ticks: Studies show OLE provides tick repellency comparable to 20% DEET. Apply to clothing and exposed skin. Combine with permethrin-treated clothing for maximum protection in tick-endemic areas.

Limitations: OLE requires more frequent reapplication than high-concentration DEET (30%+). Not recommended for children under 3. Less data available for tropical disease prevention compared to DEET (which has decades of malaria/dengue field data).

Did you know? The PMD compound in OLE was discovered when researchers analyzed why certain batches of lemon eucalyptus oil were more repellent than others. They found that aged oil undergoes a chemical reaction that converts citronellal into PMD - a compound that happens to be an exceptional mosquito repellent.
