π Identification
1.5-2mm β much smaller than most other house ants. Uniformly jet black. Move in well-defined trails. Colonies relatively small (1,000-2,000 workers). Found trailing along edges, baseboards, and countertops. Multi-queen colonies.
Key distinction from pharaoh ants: Little black ants are darker (jet black vs. amber/yellow); both are tiny. Pharaoh ant misidentification leads to wrong treatment β this ID matters.
𧬠Biology & Behavior
Nest in small, concealed locations: behind baseboards, in wall voids, under objects on countertops. Multi-queen colonies can have many satellite nests throughout a structure. Workers forage for sweets, proteins, and greasy foods.
β οΈ Damage & Health Risk
Food contamination; nuisance trail activity through kitchen and bathroom; potential contamination of pantry products.
π§ DIY Treatment
Gel bait (Advion Ant Gel or Terro liquid bait) placed directly on active trails. Multiple small placements more effective than fewer large placements. Do not spray β repellent sprays disrupt trails and prevent bait uptake. Seal entry points after colony elimination.
