π Identification
Armored Scale: Flat waxy shield separates from the insect body underneath. No honeydew production. Many species on ornamentals.
Soft Scale: Rounded waxy covering integral to the body. Produces honeydew. Brown soft scale on many houseplants.
Mealybug: White cottony wax; slow-moving; found in leaf axils, on roots, and on stems. Produces honeydew.
𧬠Biology & Behavior
Scale insects and mealybugs are among the least mobile adult pests β females of most armored scale species don't move at all after settling. They feed by inserting stylets into plant tissue. Crawler (mobile 1st instar) is the most vulnerable stage.
β οΈ Damage & Health Risk
Plant decline; yellowing; honeydew and sooty mold from soft scales and mealybugs; death of heavily infested plants; in landscapes, significant dieback of ornamental trees and shrubs.
π§ DIY Treatment
Target the mobile crawler stage with contact insecticide. Systemic imidacloprid soil drench reaches all feeding stages through the plant. Horticultural oil smothers settled scales by penetrating wax. Isopropyl alcohol on cotton swab for accessible mealybug colonies. Prune heavily infested branches.
π· When to Call a Pro
For landscape trees with severe scale infestations, trunk injection of imidacloprid or emamectin benzoate by a certified arborist is more effective than surface sprays.
