Neem Oil & Azadirachtin

Neem oil products range from crude cold-pressed oil (broad-spectrum, contains azadirachtin) to refined neem oil (fungicide only, no azadirachtin) to concentrated azadirachtin extracts. These are not all the same β€” understanding the difference prevents buying the wrong product.

🏷️ Brand Names β€” Same Active Ingredient

⚠️ Don't buy duplicates. All products below contain azadirachtin / neem oil as the active ingredient. They differ only in concentration, formulation type, and price β€” not in how they work or what they kill. Buying two different brands is buying the same pesticide twice.

βš—οΈ Mixing & Dilution Guide

Rates below are general guidelines. Always follow your specific product label β€” rates vary by brand and application site.

Foliar spray for aphids/mites/whiteflies
2 tbsp cold-pressed neem oil + 1 tsp dish soap / gal water
Emulsify soap in water first, then add neem oil. Apply to leaf undersides. Repeat every 5–7 days. Clarified neem oil products (Safer, Garden Safe) have NO insecticidal effect via azadirachtin β€” they work only as suffocants and fungicides.
Soil drench for fungus gnats
Azamax: 2 fl oz / gal; Cold-pressed neem: 2 tbsp / gal
Water into potting mix β€” azadirachtin kills fungus gnat larvae in soil. Cold-pressed neem is effective. Clarified products (Safer) are NOT effective for this use.
Powdery mildew preventive
Any neem oil product: 2 tbsp / gal
Both clarified and cold-pressed neem are effective against powdery mildew. Apply preventively β€” neem is far less effective after mildew is established.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • OMRI-listed for organic use β€” safe for certified organic production when correctly labeled
  • Do not apply neem oil when temperatures exceed 90Β°F or in direct sunlight β€” causes leaf burn
  • Do not apply to water-stressed plants β€” increases burn risk
  • Toxic to fish in concentrated form β€” do not allow runoff to water bodies
  • PyGanic is pyrethrin (not neem) β€” commonly confused in organic pest control discussions
