π Steps
1
Isolate the infested plant immediately
Mealybugs spread through plant-to-plant contact and can infest an entire collection. Move the affected plant away from all others before treating.
2
Apply rubbing alcohol with cotton swabs
Dip cotton swabs in 70% isopropyl alcohol and apply directly to each mealybug and egg mass. The alcohol penetrates the waxy coating and kills on contact. This is the fastest effective treatment for accessible infestations.
3
Spray entire plant with insecticidal soap
Mix insecticidal soap per label directions. Spray entire plant (not just visible mealybugs) β especially leaf axils, stem joints, and the underside of every leaf where mealybugs hide.
4
Apply neem oil as a follow-up
Neem oil applied 3 days after soap spray disrupts the reproductive cycle of survivors. Mix with dish soap (1tsp per quart) as an emulsifier and spray thoroughly.
5
Soil drench with imidacloprid for persistent infestations
For plants with chronic mealybug problems: apply systemic imidacloprid as a soil drench. The plant absorbs it and insects feeding on the sap are killed. Avoid on flowering plants visited by bees.
π‘ Pro Tips
- Repeat the soap spray every 5-7 days for 4-6 weeks β new mealybugs hatching from protected eggs require ongoing treatment
- Check the soil surface and pot base β root mealybugs exist and aren't visible on the plant itself
- Never mist-water infested plants β spreading water droplets spreads mealybugs to clean areas
