π Identification
Fungus Gnat (Bradysia): 2mm; dark grey-black; slender; long antennae; erratic weak flier; runs on soil surface; found near and on potting soil. Drain Fly (Psychoda): 1.5-2mm; grey; fuzzy moth-like wings held tent-like over body; wings have hair (visible with magnification); found hovering near drains, not on soil. The wing shape and body texture settles the ID β drain flies look like tiny moths; fungus gnats look like tiny mosquitoes.
𧬠Biology & Behavior
Both breed in organic-moisture environments but completely different ones: fungus gnat larvae are in moist potting soil; drain fly larvae are in biofilm inside drain pipes. This is why the treatment must match β Bti soil drench kills fungus gnat larvae but has no effect on drain fly biofilm; enzyme drain cleaner kills drain fly larvae but doesn't affect potting soil populations.
β οΈ Damage & Health Risk
Nuisance only for both. No disease transmission, no structural damage.
π§ DIY Treatment
Confirm species first, then: fungus gnat = Bti soil drench + let soil dry. Drain fly = enzyme drain cleaner applied weekly for 6-8 weeks.
