π Identification
20-40mm β huge by wasp standards. Yellow and black banded; females noticeably larger than males. Males hover aggressively near nesting areas β completely unable to sting. Females are focused on hunting cicadas, not defending territory.
𧬠Biology & Behavior
Females hunt cicadas, paralyze them with a sting, and carry them to their burrow cells. Males hover to establish territory. Solitary β no colony to defend. Peak activity July-August. Nest in sunny bare/sandy soil areas.
β οΈ Damage & Health Risk
No structural damage. Burrow excavation in lawns creates small mounds β the only aesthetic concern. Beneficial: each nest removes 1-3 cicadas from the environment.
π§ DIY Treatment
No treatment needed. For homeowners: allow them their 4-6 week season. To discourage future nesting: improve lawn density and soil moisture in sandy/bare areas. If absolutely necessary: Delta Dust at burrow entrances at night.
