π Identification
Adults: 10-20mm; robust; dark with pale hair bands; females carry pollen on the underside of the abdomen (not in pollen baskets on legs). Evidence: perfectly circular or semicircular holes cut from leaf margins β the geometry is diagnostic. A punch appears to have been used. Multiple circles from the same leaf confirm leafcutter bee activity.
𧬠Biology & Behavior
Female leafcutter bees cut leaf pieces to construct thimble-shaped cells inside pre-existing cavities (hollow stems, bee houses, wood holes). Each cell is stuffed with pollen and nectar before an egg is laid. They're important pollinators β up to twice as efficient as honey bees for some crops including blueberries and alfalfa.
β οΈ Damage & Health Risk
Cosmetic leaf damage only β the cut circles from individual leaves don't harm plant health. Cutting a few circles from rose leaves is a reasonable trade for excellent pollination services.
π§ DIY Treatment
No treatment warranted or appropriate. Install a bee house with pre-drilled holes to encourage nesting in a designated area. This is one of the easiest beneficial insects to support in your garden.
