π Identification
Soft scale (brown soft scale, wax scale): waxy covering integrated with insect body; produces honeydew; sooty mold present; scale 'juices' when probed. Armored scale (San Jose scale, euonymus scale, oystershell scale): hard cover separate from insect β scraping reveals distinct cover and yellow insect underneath; no honeydew; no sooty mold. This distinction determines effective treatment.
𧬠Biology & Behavior
Soft scales: systemic insecticides (imidacloprid) and horticultural oil both work well. Armored scales: imidacloprid often ineffective (armor blocks systemic uptake); horticultural oil at crawler stage (May-June) or dormant oil in winter most effective. Crawlers β the dispersing juvenile stage β are the most vulnerable for both species.
β οΈ Damage & Health Risk
Leaf yellowing; premature leaf drop; twig dieback; sooty mold from soft scale honeydew; significant ornamental value loss.
π§ DIY Treatment
Soft scale: imidacloprid soil drench or horticultural oil spray. Armored scale: horticultural oil at crawler stage in May-June; dormant oil late winter. Monitor with sticky tape wrapped around branches.
π· When to Call a Pro
Professional systemic applications for soft scale on high-value specimens; arborist assessment for armored scale on valuable trees.
