π Identification
30-40mm β largest assassin bug in North America. Unmistakable feature: prominent cogwheel or gear-like crest on the thorax (the 'wheel'). Dark grey/brown with orange/red spots on abdomen. Long curved beak folded under body. Long, thin legs. Nymphs are bright red and black β no wheel crest yet.
𧬠Biology & Behavior
Wheel bugs are apex predators among insects β they attack and feed on virtually any invertebrate they can overpower including caterpillars, beetles, stink bugs, and even wasps. They inject a powerful enzyme that paralyzes and liquefies prey. Entirely beneficial. Slow-moving; rarely fly.
β οΈ Damage & Health Risk
Zero damage to structures, plants, or stored goods. Entirely beneficial β consumes large numbers of pest insects. The one concern: if handled, wheel bugs can deliver an extremely painful defensive bite that's described as more painful than bee sting, with pain lasting hours to days. Never handle with bare hands.
π§ DIY Treatment
No treatment needed or appropriate. If found indoors, wear gloves and use a jar to capture and release outside. The same approach applies to all assassin bugs.
π· When to Call a Pro
Never warranted for wheel bugs.
