π Identification
Medium-sized bird: 30-35cm; grey with iridescent neck; variable coloring in feral populations. Nests on ledges, window sills, HVAC equipment, and any elevated flat surface. Found in all US cities. Roost and nest in the same sites year after year.
𧬠Biology & Behavior
Feral pigeons are descended from domestic rock doves. They have extraordinary site fidelity β the same birds use the same ledges for years. Removing birds without excluding access results in rapid recolonization by neighboring flocks.
β οΈ Damage & Health Risk
Guano corrosion of building materials (pH 3-4); disease risk from dry guano (histoplasmosis, cryptococcosis); HVAC blockage and contamination; aesthetic damage and odor; slip-and-fall liability from guano accumulations.
π§ DIY Treatment
Physical exclusion is the only permanent solution: bird spikes on ledges, bird wire systems, anti-perch netting over larger areas. Scare devices provide temporary relief only. Professional guano cleanup requires N95 minimum and gloves due to pathogen risk in dry guano.
π· When to Call a Pro
Commercial bird exclusion (netting, electric track, structural modifications) requires professional installation and is cost-effective compared to ongoing guano damage repair costs.
