π Identification
Green stink bug (Chinavia hilaris): uniformly bright green; 14-18mm; smooth shield shape; found on garden plants in summer β beans, tomatoes, peppers, corn. Does NOT aggregate on homes in fall. Native species. BMSB (Halyomorpha halys): mottled brown with white-banded antennae; 14-17mm; alternating light and dark bands on abdomen edge; aggregates on structures in fall. Invasive. The green color vs. brown mottling is the fastest field ID.
𧬠Biology & Behavior
Green stink bugs are native and ecologically appropriate garden visitors β they're plant feeders causing crop damage but not home invaders. BMSB invaded from Asia and specifically seeks structures for winter shelter in fall. Knowing which species you have determines whether you need September home perimeter spray (BMSB) or garden insect management (green stink bug).
β οΈ Damage & Health Risk
Green stink bug: garden crop damage (piercing feeding on fruit and seeds). BMSB: fall home invasion in massive numbers; foul odor when crushed; agricultural crop losses.
π§ DIY Treatment
Green stink bug in garden: pyrethrin or spinosad spray on garden plants; row covers for protection. BMSB on house exterior: September bifenthrin perimeter spray on south and west walls before aggregation.
π· When to Call a Pro
For major BMSB pressure on high-value crops: professional perimeter netting or lambda-cyhalothrin programs.
